Time, space, and energy all present barriers in our lives. The greater the space between two things, the greater the resistance there is to move through that space. Thus, as we’re building our workstations, we want to make sure that everything is as accessible as possible.
In fact, if you can try to keep things within swivel-distance from your workstation, you’re going to have far greater success.
Keep your Tools Closer
It’s a concept called propinquity. What has been found is that when there’s a gap between where you are and where your tool is, the likelihood that you will use it is greatly reduced. For instance, if your exercise equipment is on the ground floor of your home, the likelihood that you’ll use it is much greater. If it’s down in the basement, you’ll use it only rarely.
The same is true of filing. If you’re able to spin around in your chair and put files away, you will be more apt to do it more frequently. If you have to get up, go around your desk, walk across the room, and stuff it into a folder that’s really jam-packed, the likelihood that you’re going to consistently file drops. You will instead rationalize that you prefer to leave the files in a pile on your desk, that you know where everything is.
Clutterfied
If you were to go to a surgeon, who had piles of tools instead of having them laid out in an organized fashion, would you feel good about that surgeon? Would you think he was going to be as effective and efficient as someone whose tools were laid out appropriately for the task?
The same is true with us.When our belongings are cluttered, although we may feel like we know where everything is, the truth is that there’s inefficiency inside that system. We want to minimize the space between our filing cabinet and ourselves, for instance. From an energy standpoint, think about how much energy you’re expending just packing the paper into those overcrowded folders.
Think About It
How easy is it for you to create new files? How well have you set up your computer system so that you can find the files that you placed away? Or are you looking around trying to find things?
